SHOW ME WHERE IT HURTS
Hand-drawn animation with sound
SHOW ME WHERE IT HURTS is a pop culture fever dream, borrowing lyrics from Miley Cyrus' 2013 single, "We Can't Stop" to help articulate one brief moment in the ever-evolving conversation on American feminism. In 2013, there was a flurry of media attention surrounding Cyrus. A once well-loved child star, she had spent the year aggressively shedding her former Disney persona in exchange for an independent, sexually charged identity.
Below is the full animation, which was shown in two satellite solo exhibitions titled DARK SPRING — one exhibition at EIGEN + ART Lab in Berlin, Germany, and the other at BravinLee Projects in NYC.
